Epson Transparency Adapter problem

I have an Epson 1000C scanner and EU 13 transparency adapter.  I'm 
having a problem with the unit so that when the cover is closed, the 
software will say the cover is open.  Sometimes raising the cover a 
bit or putting a book on the cover to weigh it down more will allow 
the scanning to proceed.

It seems like it is either a problem with the contacts between the 
scanner and adapter, or a bad wire, but I cannot find any mechanical 
pin to indicate a contact point.  Does anyone have suggestions of how 
to figure this out?
