Photoshop Question (duh)

In my last post I asked:

Dumb.  Answered my own questions shortly after posting 
this.  As far as I can tell:  Yes, it's easy to do this with a 
mask (make the mask using the 'Threshold' tool.)

As far as I can tell, Yes (ie., it does lead to similar artifacts 
as if I'd applied the curve without the mask.)
