Re: my XP laptop is driving me crazy

Hi Doug
I too am writing you from a Sony "XP" laptop.  Mine is the PCG FX290.  A 1 Ghz 512 MB 30 GB model. I have moved it from ME to 2000 and now XP during the months of September, November and December last year.  And yes XP initially drove me crazy too.  And yes Sony support is worthless and at times even surely in not assisting.  If you have the Sony XP discs and a lot of patience you can get it done.  The drivers are all on the discs, but they don't install quickly.  It may take 20 to 30 minutes of the machine being halted (and seeming dead) looking for the drivers (like the funny sony modem chip driver) before it finally finds it and proceeds.  Once all of the proper drivers are there then it works.  The drivers are not on the web site for down load.  I down loaded all of the Sony stuff and reinstalled at least 15 times from scratch before learning what I mentioned above.
If you have any other specific questions that you would like to ask please contact me off list.

Best of Luck

Hi-

Have you been to the XP update site? Several compatability patches have been posted.

Just open an IE explorer window, click tools, windows update, and follow the prompts.

Also, go to the sony web support and see if they have anything as model/os specific updates...

if all else fails, insert the XP disk, and choose  repair an installation....

Hope this helps,
Doug Nobiletti
