I wouldn't be concerned if all the detail in the film is in the scan with
linear transitions.  To this point I haven't seen clipping problems with the
8000 with chromes or negs, but have yet to check the histograms.  Nikonscan
maps the black end point a little high (and higher still for negs than
chromes, which is as it should be) presumably for pre-press use where one
doesn't want absolute zeros, but also gives you eye droppers with settable
points in the curves dialogue.  I don't see a problem here.

I learned last night that color negs never band(?), so there's no need to
use super fine scan mode with color negs?  And the minimum for best quality
with chromes is 2x multisample, ICE, and 14 bit output.  I've never seen
chrome scans this good coming off a CCD scanner.
