This url was posted on this list some time ago. I used the second
method and got much better results of the negs I had to scan.
Removing the mask with the red channel seems a bit tricky, it has
to be done with more care than is suggested in that method. Beter
reverse all 3 channels and then do the correction in the red
channel with more care.

The problem is in Auto Exposure on Windows ME (but also W98SE in
my experience) for 3 versions NikonScan: 3.1.0/3.1.1/3.1.2   But
Nikon only made 3 versions, ample time to correct it or use a
macro that does the same method as can be found on the cited
site.
