LOL!  As one who's lived in upstate New York, 
I know of one such canal.  Your point is well 
taken.  It's really hard to imagine where or how 
those gear teeth come into play.  Maybe they're 
just for show.

I've been loathe to open up the scanner.  Maybe 
when it's well out of warranty and/or messes up 
in a big way.
