However a "blurry version of a grainy scan" does indicate that the 
defocus has eliminated the spatial frequencies which could read to grain 
aliasing, possibly with too much blur to be able to adequately recover 
remaining information with USM.

Whether it makes up for the difference between the Minolta and the Nikon 
depends on whether that is primarily due to aliasing.  Having the 
original images and the scanned results from the Nikon puts you in one 
of the best positions for making such a comparison.
