I don't find that at all surprising David - I bet it scans faster at 
lower resolutions as well.  Low resolution scanning - in most scanners - 
is just dropping pixels, which makes the aliasing and undersampling even 
worse.

The Nikon units, however, scan everything at full resolution and then 
digitally filter and downsample the images to produce the low resolution 
output.  The downside of that is that low resolution scans take just as 
long as high resolution ones, and they have clearly had some complaints 
about that since they have an explanation on their web site.  :-)
