1) they don't want you getting into the thing

2) if the bulb burns out, you are supposed to replace the whole unit

3) I'm sure there is a way in, via the bottom, either with screws or 
plastic spring latches (not always obvious).  I've had most of my 
flatbed scanners (and friend's scanners) open for one reason or another, 
and you can open them all, just not from the top.

 

4) they don't want you getting into the thing (see 1)) ;-)
