RE: SilverFast (Good? Bad? Ugly?)

Harry,

Thanks for your comments. I have the version 5.2 (or close to that). It
has a negative "fixing" feature where you set the film type. In looking at
the SilverFast web site I could not tell how "negafix" differed
significantly from what I had. I had also heard some negative (on pun
intended) comments about it. Can you enlighten me as to what it provides
beyond what is in the earlier versions.

Thanks

Jim

1. i'm not an expert on scanning but i'll give my 2 cents worth in re:
silverfast.
2. i've used the minolta multiscan pro and i think that software is
very good--as a baseline. i'm currently using the polaroid 120, which
i purchased with silverfast 5.0--> i upgraded to 5.5 because of the
"negafix"
feature. i wouldn't say that it's significantly better than the minolta
software but it's much much much better than the polaroid software.
furthermore, i do like the negafix--i get fairly nice scans from color
negs etc... i do not like the fact that you can't scan negs in 48 bit
color via the regular silverfast software. what you have to do is scan
the negative as a positive (ie it still looks like a negative) and then
use another silverfast program (HDR) to open that up and convert it...
a pain in the butt and more money to spend for the software.
3. the only other scanner software i've used is vuescan, which is much
more limited than silverfast or any other scanner sofware, in terms of
manipulation--i only use it for images i want to stitch d/t exposure
/ color lock etc...

take care. harry
