When the Device Manager window is active, you can hit "refresh" and Windows will perform an update of all plug-and-play devices. FYI, in Windows 2000 (and I presume in XP too), you can right-click in Device Manager and select "Scan for hardware changes" to have the computer refresh all drives and SCSI devices. If you want, you can put a direct link to the Device Manager on your start menu or desktop so you don't have to open Control Panel and select "System."
