David, your whole argument reminds me of a neophyte programmer who asked why, since the rest of his computer was 32-bits, the designers hadn't built in a 32-bit A/D converter for the analog inputs being measured. In "real life," S/N ratios and noise limits make it hard to reasonably capture more than 8-10 meaningful bits from a CCD. Bear in mind that the data is taken serially, at pretty high rates, from the CCD imager, so gain-bandwidth product is a real issue here. rafe b. - Turn off HTML mail features.
