RE: What is the best PC to run Nikon 4000 Scanner?

If you are paying any premium at all for RDRAM, I'd say screw it and get a
PC with DDR. Personally, I like AMD over intel, but this is a personal
choice. Nvidia brought out the GeForce4, so I'm not sure you want to get the
old model unless its heavily discounted.[Probably the difference is only
noted in 3d applications.] If you could get Win2kPro with an upgrade path to
WinXP, I'd take that path, though less complaints about XP are showing up on
the net.

Have you seen this digital flat panel in the flesh, or do you have the right
to return it? I find most LCD displays look very coarse. [Yes, even from
Apple.]

My preference is a system with a promise controller on board for the hard
drive interface. This gives you the option of up to 4 ATA133 drives in
addition to 4 IDE ports. Not as good as SCSI, but a good bang for the buck.

Normally I wouldn't worry about adding firewire, but with Dell/Compaq/HP
etc, you never know about adding hardware. My preference is to build a good
clone using standard off the shelf components rather than mystery
motherboards that the big boys use.

One annoying thing about Dell, etc, is that when new software comes out, you
need to go back to Dell to load it, rather than just getting the software
from Creative, nvidia, etc.
