I've been using a Dimension 8100 for more than a year. I don't see how you would be dissatisfied with the 8200 in the configuration you mention. Since disk i/o is important in these applications, you might see if you can learn the brand/model and check its performance on one of the hard drive review sites. Also, verify that the interface is ATA133, since that's the latest and greatest(?). The only improvement I could suggest is another 20GB drive as a scratch disk for Photoshop. Of course you could go over the top with storage like the system I use for nonlinear editing of video material: external striped SCSI array. I just added a second drive to my 8100, and several Dells I've owned had room for this. The on board ATA/IDE controller supports two drives on each of two channels, so you can have two hard drives and two CD drives (DVD/CD-ROM and CD-RW) without adding an additional controller on a card. The cards are not expensive, but they use a slot. The ribbon cable provided with my Dell includes the second connector. Yes, IEEE 1394 will use a PCI slot, but you should have at least three open slots. Can't say that I'm a fan of flat panel displays, though. M. What is the best PC to run Nikon 4000 Scanner? I am thinking of getting a new Dell PC before I purchase a Nikon 4000 Scanner. Was considering the below. Any thoughts? Concerns: 1) I understand there may be a problem adding a second hard disk latter. 2) No Firewire built into motherboard 3) Wanted to get Flat Panel because of space (how will this monitor render images vs CRT).
