Mike - I have the same questions as your 1 & 2. Annoying over-automation 
and absence of communicating to users what the designers decided and why.

I'd also like to know what's going on with TWAIN keeping my hard drive 
accessing every second. I have 128 MB of RAM and it's action is 
independent of image size. What could possibly be the reason to access a 
file on the HD while waiting for a command input?

(BTW, very well-put question, with your situation and needs described 
clearly).

I'll be waiting for any answers to these.
