[OT] New to the list - May I introduce myself?

Hi everybody,

this, I hope, will be my first and only off-topic post to this list -
just a brief introduction of mine in order to let you know who I am,
what gear I use for what purpose and what you can expect from me as to
this list :-)

My name is Ralf Schmode and I work as a radiation protection and
radioactive waste management engineer at Geesthacht Research Reactor,
GKSS Research Centre, Geesthacht (Germany) - see http://www.gkss.de for
details about my employer.

Most of my spare time is devoted to animal photography, especially zoo
animals, as seen on http://schmode.net. I use Canon EOS gear for the
photography (EOS 50 body, 300/4 L IS USM prime and 80-200/2.8 L zoom)
and - which brings me to the topic of this list - use film scanning for
getting my photos into something digital. Until December 2001 I used a
Nikon Coolscan LS-30 for that purpose which, after its sudden death, was
replaced by a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite II which had a severe shadow
banding issue right from the start and was replaced by another unit -
which had exactly the same problem :-( I returned that as well and got a
Nikon Coolscan IV LS-40 ED in exchange, which is what I am using happily
right now. So I can possibly give advice as to the use of Nikon scanners
(I use Ed Hamrick's Vuescan with the LS-40, by the way) but don't expect
anything but spells and curses from me as far as Minolta scanners are
concerned ;-)

Well, that's all for today. I hope my future contributions will be of
more value to the list :-) If anyone here would like to contact me
off-list for whatever purpose private e-mail is always welcome.

Greetings from Germany -

Ralf
