You can't cut and paste 16 bit images in PS6, but rather have to convert to 8 bit first. For panoramic stitching, this is an annoyance because you would like to combine all images together in 16 bit mode so that they can be image adjusted at the same time. What I do is run the level adjustment for each image to get the histogram limits required, find limits that will accommodate all images (i.e. the smallest min and the largest max among all the images), then adjust the levels using these limits for all individual images.
