The old version of the S10/S20 software did allow for hi-bit scanning,
but it was hidden. You had to click on an icon in one of the nested
folders to get to it.

I imagine the new software might have it as a default. (more below on
your current problem)

It might be an error in the way the TWAIN driver was written by HP, but
more likely a problem with how you are accessing it.

Try this first:

Do NOT open the HP driver software separately.

Open Photoshop...

When you go into Photoshop, go to File>Import>select TWAIN_32 source,
and make sure that the menu that comes up indicates you are in the
HPS10/S20 TWAIN driver, if it does not, it should show that option in
the list. Click on it, and click on select. If it is still showing an
older version of the TWAIN driver software on that list, you should
probably delete it (the way you normally uninstall the driver). If you
have other scanners (like a flatbed that has a TWAIN driver), it will
probably also be listed in that list, don't remove anything you are
still using.

Then, go to File>Import>TWAIN_32 and the HP software should open up

(make sure the Scanner is on and it might need film at the entrance to
work, I can't recall...)

Do your scan in the HP software, and then do whatever the software
requires to get the image into Photoshop.

Go back into File>Import>Select TWAIN_32 and make sure it is still
reading the correct HP driver.

If it has changed, something is messed up, as it should stay there until
you change it manually.

If the Import Select_32 menu has NOT changed, (that's good!) try to scan
another image. You do this by going to the File>Import>Twain_32 menu
item and the HP software should open up again.

If it gives you error messages, try minimizing Photoshop, and if the HP
software is still running in the background, see if there is an option
to have it shut down after it transfers the image to Photoshop (this
will probably be a check box in a menu, like preferences). If that's an
option, do so, and close the HP software down, and try from photoshop
again (File>Impot>TWAIN_32)... it should work.

If there is no option to close down the HP software, and it is not
allowing you a second scan from Photoshop using the method I mentioned
(File>Import>TWAIN_32) try manually closing down the HP software after
the image is moved to Photoshop (it will probably be lurking behind
Photoshop) and see if that works. If it does, HP needs to fix their
software to either automatically shut down after the transfer or to work
when it is recalled in Photoshop.
