Thanks for all of the helpful responses on PhotoShop filters only working 
in 8-bit. I'm using software only recently downloaded from HP. The software 
on my old computer (now crashed and buried) never gave me the option to 
scan in 16-bit mode, I guess.  Anyway, thanks.

Another question: This new HP software lets me import the scan directly 
into PhotoShop, on the first scan only. On the second attempt to import I 
get two error messages:

First message:   "There is already a version of  the HP PhotoSmart s10/s20 
scanner software running."

Second message:  "Could not open the TWAIN source. Make sure there is a 
valid source for your scanner in the TWAIN directory found in the Windows 
directory."

Somehow I feel this problem isn't as easy to fix as my last.
