Marilyn-- Be cautious; everybody claims a Dmax of 3+ (and indeed I did find a brochure for the ScanMaker 8700 that claims 3.4) but it appears that nobody delivers more than about 2 or so in the price range we're discussing, so don't let the specs rule your decision-making. Of course the rub is that if you can't trust the specs you have to test every scanner yourself, which is of course impossible. I made my best guess and, except for Dmax got a very good scanner. Phil Lippincot says he's putting together a new website that will report on the (apparently extensive) scanner testing he's done, which should be a boon to the online community.
