Jan, are you saying you will *only* scan prints? In that case, 600 ppi is plenty; for most color prints 150 or 300 will suffice to get all info there is out of the print. If I read you correctly, I advise you to keep the old one for now, and see if your new system will handle it (even if there is no original Umax driver for the new system, Vuescan at www.hamrick.com can often solve the problem). If it is indeed impossible to run the oldie, then do consider a "cheap entry level scanner"; it will be quite sufficient for your use (as I read it), and you can upgrade later if your needs change. Then you are in a position to buy the newest at that time, without having spent a lot now...
