The 4.2 doesn´t mean anything as it is only the calculated log of the
dynamic range, the theoretical max. resolution, of the used 14 bit A/D
converter. log(2^14 bit)=4.2. For a 12 bit/channel scanner this formula
gives log(2^12)=3.6, a number that is given very often too. This kind of
marketing-BS is a bit like advertising a car as "3 gals/100 miles fast".
