o In most cases a dedicated filmscanner will indeed give you 
significantly better results than a flatbed.

o The best bang for the buck currently seems to be the Polaroid 
SS4000 for $700 minus a $200 rebate.

o I'm not sure if there's anything decent in the $300 to $400 range, 
but you should check prices on the low-end Minoltas.

o A recent review of the Epson Perfection 2450 flatbed scanner at 
http://www.virtualtraveller.org/epson2450.htm looked very promising, 
and isn't that in the $300 price range?
