best negative scanner?

Hi,
I am thinking of buying a negative and slide only scanner.  I hope this will 
mean I get more quality for my money, rather than a scanner that scans prints 
also.  I would like advice about this, and also approximate price and brand 
information.  Am I wrong to think I could get good quality for about $300. to 
$400. ?  
Also, how much more would I have to pay to get firewire.  I have a G3 
Macintosh with a firewire, usb card.
Thanks to anyone willing to answer.  I welcome all opinions, and/or links.
