Epson printer power. was: Re: Epson 1650

Judith,

You have it right. By turning off the printer with the swicth you park the
heads. However, the printer will park the heads on my 1270 (power on) if I
go for a long time in between prints. The info about not cutting power to
the printer is for two basic reasons. 1) if the power is cut without the
heads parked you get clogs, dry heads, etc. 2) the printer uses a small
amount of power to keep in memory how long the printer has been idle. The
start-up sequence will change depending on how long the printer has been
sitting. If only a short while has passed then the printer does a very
short cleaning cycle and you're ready to print. If a lot of time has
passed, or if you cut the power to the machine, then a longer cleaning cycle
takes place and of course more ink is purged in the process. Remember that
really long and noisy purge cycle when you turned on the printer for the
first time?? Unplug it for a few days, and it'll happen all over again when
you next power up.

I found several long/broken threads on the subject and it seems that
different Epson models may react differently to this, but at least you and I
know what we're doing is right. I think. :)

And just to get this back on topic - It appears that the lamp in my SS4000
stays lighted the whole time the machine is on. I really wish it didn't.
Does anyone know if this can be changed in the software and how? My HP s20
didn't even have a power switch and I didn't have to remember to power it up
before the PC, just insert film and the lamp turns on. Neat trick! ; )
