Some electronic devices suffer gradual thermal fatigue from being turned off
and on, such as the bond wires on power transistors that run hot. On the
other hand, other devices degrade slowly merely by being left on, such as
lamp filaments. Which effect dominates in the scanner I have no idea, but
those two effects do exist in the real world.
