Re: VueScan
I tried to send a reply off list, and the address bounced.
My message was as follows:
I have an LS-30 also. I have both NS3.1 and Vuescan. I use Vuescan almost
exclusively, because of the much better scan quality (I use mostly color
negative material, for which Vuescan is exemplary). NS3.1 has lots of
'bells & whistles', but the results seem to be significantly inferior
to my eye. For one thing, Vuescan does not blow out the highlights the
way NS wants to. Pretty much the only time I use NS is when the LS-30 may
be acting up, as it does occasionally, so to diagnose whether the trouble
is with VS or the hardware, I run NS, and it almost always confirms that
the banding, etc., is still there, hence I have to give the hardware a
rest. It may be troublesome for hours or days, but just when I am
becoming impatient, it comes back beautifully.
I find that the scratch&dust 'Clean' mode in VS is as good as ICE. So
is Restore Colors, and with negatives, 'Faded' is even better. All in
all, using VS in 64-bit RGBI scan mode, you can get the benefit of the
10-bit data, which NS doesn't, and you can use that for a few critical
steps (levels, curves, etc.) in Photoshop, and then drop down to the best
24-bit mode to conserve hard drive space. The interface is not as sexy,
but the performance is what counts.Learn VS, and use it in good health!
Good luck,
Hersch
PS, if you wish to correspond further, I'd be happy to share experiences
with you, if you can improve on the address...

Hello list
Because I saw Vuescan mentioned on this list I have downloaded a copy but
not tried it as yet (time robbers seem to forever find me)
I would be interested in comments about its use and any comparisons to
SilverFast

Any comments about improving scans from a nikon coolscan III or agfa
T1200 appreciated.
Many thanks in anticipation
