question about bttv sound playback

When I use one distro(kernel 2.4) and install xawtv, I can hear audio part 
of TV signal even when xawtv is NOT running.

When I switch to another distro(also kernel 2.4, stock kernel), I can't hear 
TV sound when  xawtv is not running. because of this, I can't capture audio 
during TV recording.

What's the problem?
