Hi Bill,
        I tried a work around. I removed my pci 64 card from the
mother board.
I downloaded sndconfig and tried a manual configuration.
the device was detected to be
VIA technologies, VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller,
which is correct, 'cause it works well on my windows installation.

But as the driver installation continued, sndconfig gave me this error,

 The following error occurred running the modprobe program:       │
                            │                                                                  │
                            │ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o:   │
                            │ init_module: No such device                                      │
                            │ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o:   │
                            │ insmod                                                           │
                            │ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o    │
                            │ failed                                                           │
                            │ /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o:   │
                            │ insmod sound-slot-0 failed

The same error was detected when I manually ran modprobe.

Let me know if you have any clue to this.
guess u cud try configuring ur sound card with  sndconfig, or select the driver
manually from the list or try running  ~# modprobe emu10k1

regards,
Vivek

Hi,
     I have the same problem with my pci64 soundblaster live card.
RH 8.0 detects my card as VIA technologies, VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller,
and it is loading the module via82cxxx_audio.
When I play the test sound, the sound doesnt seem to play.
My card is PCI 64 SOUND BLASTER LIVE!
I had recently changed my mother board, therefore I have some doubt
if there is anything wrong with the jumper settings. It is an onboard
supported board with display and everything built into it.

What is the correct module for this card.

Here are the list of modules in the kernel sound modules directory :

ls -al /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ac97_codec.o       btaudio.o          gus.o              msnd_pinnacle.o
trix.o
awe_wave.o         esssolo1.o         msnd.o             sb_lib.o
uart401.o
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I load the sb.o driver, it gives me the following error message :

/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
      You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: insmod sb failed

My card had no problems running with the earlier versions of redhat I had,
which was RH 6.1, but I dont remember the module I used with that.

Please let me know what I must do in this case.

Hm, your motherboard probably has built-in audio as well, that's
where the VIA dectection is coming in.

emu10k1 is the module for a SB Live.

Bill
