usb mount stops working after update

I used to mount my usb disk by mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb It worked well.
But after I install all update for rh9 ( the kernel now is 2.4.20-31.9 instead of 2.4.20-8 ), it fails. The flash light on the disk even doesn't become on after plug in. and after run the same command, it shows "mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device"
anyone has a clue?
