Ok, let's verify the tape drive, just to be sure:

Put a writeable, blank tape (or one you can overwrite) in the drive.

cd /boot
tar cvf /dev/st0 *
(this will store the files in the /boot dir to the tape)
Once you get the prompt back, type:

tar tvf /dev/st0

You should get a list of files that matches the list of files in your 
/boot dir.
If you get an error, post it back to this list.
