That's what I think is wrong. From man xset

esp. since it keeps giving you its std. error message. Try
xset
+fp=/share/apps/Mathematica7.0/SystemFiles/Fonts/Type1,/share/apps/Mathematica7.0/SystemFiles/Fonts/BDF
