The best way to start is to use the installation that you already have. Install the kernel-source rpm which is on the first installation disk. This will put the source into /usr/src/linux-2.x and apply all the appropriate patches. You can cp this tree into you home directory. Then you can run xconfig or menuconfig and follow the instructions. You should get one of the references that othres have suggested. The boot loader should be configured to use either your new kernel or the original. This allows you to recover if you make a mess. When you are comfortable with this process, you can move on.
