there was recently a small bit of progress in open source in the USA,
AMTRAK the USA rail system in July put out a bid for 14 DMU type rail
cars, these are self propelled passenger cars, 8 powerd and 6 control
trailers. they were spec,ed with all computer software to be non
proprietary. not much but Amtrak has had many years of problems with
propietary software in the controls of thier passenger trains, from the
simple things like heat and air conditioning controls to the engine
operating controls, Open Source if it works here would probably spread to
the rest of the system (assuming it survives)
