NTSB ANNOUNCES KICK OFF EVENT TO NATIONAL YOUTH TRAFFIC SAFETY MONTH

April 30, 2012

WASHINGTON – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) today announced that it will hold a Youth Open House and Transportation Educational Day on May 7, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

More than 100 teenagers from across the nation will participate in the one-day event. They will learn about the safety mission of the NTSB and through case studies and group discussions, gain valuable knowledge about the lessons learned from accidents that the NTSB has investigated. Participants will be equipped with tips and tools that they can use to help educate and influence their peers to be safer drivers and passengers.

“The Youth Open House is an effort to empower teens to take the safety message to their peers,” said NTSB Board Member Robert L. Sumwalt. “Teen driver safety, an issue area on our Most Wanted List, is one of the agency’s highest safety advocacy priorities. This event gives us the opportunity to educate young leaders in a direct and powerful way.”

The National Organization for Youth Safety (NOYS) and the Close-Up Foundation will participate in the event, which will feature a distracted driving simulator. In addition, Toyota NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Tayler Malsam, and actor Bryton James from the television series, “The Young and the Restless,” will attend and offer their perspectives on teen driving safety.

The group will hear from a panel of NTSB Board members, investigators, and staff, as well as from representatives from NOYS, and a Howard University Medical Center doctor on issues related to teen driving safety.

The event will be held in the NTSB Board Room and Conference Center, located at 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S.W. in Washington, D.C. from 9:30am-4:30pm. Follow our updates throughout the day on Twitter, @ #NTSByouthday.
