************************************************************ NTSB ADVISORY ************************************************************ National Transportation Safety Board Washington, DC 20594 January 6, 2012 ************************************************************ NTSB SENDING TEAM TO INVESTIGATE RAIL ACCIDENT IN NORTHWEST INDIANA ************************************************************ The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is dispatching a go-team to investigate the freight train derailment that occurred near Westville, Indiana, earlier today. At approximately 2:25 p.m. (CST), a CSX freight train rear-ended another CSX freight train, while a third CSX freight train was passing on the adjacent track. As a result of this incident, a number of cars derailed and a small fire ensued. Several injuries have been reported. Railroad Investigator Ted Turpin is Investigator-in-Charge and is traveling to the scene from the NTSB's regional office near Los Angeles. He will be accompanied by NTSB technical specialists in the areas of human performance, operations, and signals.
