edl support for audio files?

Is there a reason why edl support only works with viceo files in
mplayer and not with audio only files?

I have hacked together a quick workaround demo (linux at least) as
described here:

It would be much cleaner if this was possible in mplayer itself
though. (is it there already but I am doing something wrong?)
