Mplayer tweaks for low end hardware

I have given below the configuration of a low end system

Motherboard - Intel 945GSE
Processor - Intel Atom CPU N270  1.60GHz
Ram - 1 GB
Graphics - Intel GMA950

Mplayer plays very slowly sometimes frame by frame or the video fails to 
load at all for 1080/720p h264/mpeg encoded videos in mkv/mp4 containers.

How to enable video/hardware acceleration for smooth playouts. I have 
read about VDPAU for nvidia based graplics cards and also VA-API for 
Intel based chipsets.

Please let me know of details.
