How to convert digicam generated mov files to a more space efficient format?

Hi List,

My digital camera is spitting out mov files that are very large.  I'd
like to have a script that converts these mov files to some other
format (mpeg or avi) that is much more space efficient and has roughly
the same quality.  So I'm basically interested in the ultimate
mencoder / mplayer / ffmpleg command line combo for the task.
