There are a bunch of people doing this for free. Look here: http://www.caosity.org/ and here http://www.beau.org/~jmorris/linux/whitebox/ There is also a mailing list here: rhel-rebuild-l@xxxxxxxxxx In addition people like Owl River do it for a fee. As you can see there are alternatives for those of us who do not have the money for Red Hat but are willing to do at least some of the work. I firmly believe what Red Hat is doing wrt fedora is good for the community. If you do not believe that lurk on the fedora lists for a couple of weeks and take notice of the names you will see posting. I regularly see such unknowns as Eric Raymond and Alan Cox posting there. :-) As best as I can tell Red Hat is dumping a lot of money into Fedora and is trying very hard to make it the best possible distro for those that want the very latest in technology. For those who for one reason or another find they need stability over bleeding edge there is RHEL. If you cannot afford to pay Red Hat to build and support it for you, then they are still giving anyone with the time, knowledge and ambition to use their bits to turn it into something useful for them. They do not have to do that. They could just say we are only required by the GPL to release the src to our customers. I thank them for making the source rpms available on their ftp sites. I am in the same situation as a lot of people here in that I am unemployed and cannot afford Red Hat's services. I have built 2.1AS from source. It was not that hard and no I am NOT a programmer. I know of several others who have rebuilt 2.1 and 3 from source. I am told like 2.1AS it takes time and a little fiddling around but it is very possible. Took me about 3 days to build 2.1AS.
