You won't necessarily end up with text only if the installer does not go into GUI mode. Framebuffer mode may work post install, for example. You may be able to poke at different Xfree servers as well. Also later versions support more cards, if RAM and proc aren't limitations, perhaps he can get 7.x installed? My suggestion, though, is to start selling him on 7.3 for his new machine. Try the new stuff!
