INITIAL SUMMARY: moving a lot of data

Thanks for all the replies,
I now have a lot to think about....

People made all the good suggestions
- compress - yes, the data is compressed already
- encrypt - that's certainly going to be done, even
if we use tape - this is patient data,
(it's a federal crime to let it escape :-)
- courier - yes, courier is what I meant, I was just recalling
that in school they atually said, a truck full
of tapes can still move data cheaper than a net
connection - and it still is true, because
as fast as the network costs drop, the media
size drops, until you can put a Terabyte
is a 2-pound pack from the post office (soon).
(Actually, when we do DR tests we have 2 goals,
seeing if it can be done with current backups, and
also *succeeding*, so we have had a guy drive to the office
to get a tape that should have been in the vault, then fix the list)
- USB Disk - A few people suggested this - good idea, easy
- DVD - a few people pointed out that this is a few DVDs/
- T1 - would be maxed out, no room for error/retry
- T2 or T3 - if available

- On the other hand, people pointed out that nothing beats
the script-it-and-forget-it - which is what we do, I am the
system architect for Enteprise Integration at work.

- It was pointed out that data should be copied and possibly
sent twice, to avoid NOT getting a piece and spending an
extra day or 2 getting it.

- rsync was mentioned - good idea, not relevant to this case.
We need one-way traffic. Someone is scanning some docs for us
and sending us the result.

I'll try to remember to summarize after go live,
which is in 2 months.
