Thanks to D. Stimits and Bob Ramsey who replied.
D. Stimits suggested that I use strace to find out why I could not
create a file on /mnt/sda1. I did not do that because I knew the
reason: the ownership of the mounted volume. I wanted to know why the
ownership in the one case was that of the user (js.js) and in the
other case it was that of root (root.root) although the volume was
mounted by the user.
Bob suggested I use chown on the mounted volume and I did that. That
changed the ownership js.js and now even when I umount it and remount
it, it stays js.js.
The mystery deepens. Nothing has changed either as far as the
ownership of the device (/dev/sdb1) or that of the mount point
(/mnt/sda1) is concerned.
This is not a crisis to me. I just want to understand the behaviour.
Enjoy your day.
