Connecting 2 machines - Gigabit Ethernet Card - Cross Cable connection

Hi Managers,

I connected to machines using Gigabit Ethernet Card / Cross cable
connection.
Once connected, I am able to ping the other machine.

-bash-2.05b# ping 172.16.1.2
PING 172.16.1.2 (172.16.1.2) from 172.16.1.1 : 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 172.16.1.2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.210 ms
64 bytes from 172.16.1.2: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.303 ms
64 bytes from 172.16.1.2: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.428 ms
64 bytes from 172.16.1.2: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=0.166 ms
64 bytes from 172.16.1.2: icmp_seq=5 ttl=64 time=0.157 ms

Now I want to enable jumbo frames ( mtu 9000) so I am giving the
command

ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000 up ----------> in both the interfaces.

Once I enable the Jumbo frames in both the interfaces, the machines
fails to communicate.

Could someone explain me

 - whether the above ping time is correct ?
 - whether my approach to connecting the machines are ok.
 - for file transfer, what is the maximum speed.

- I am using cat5e cross cable.
- ethtool says both the interfaces are up with 1000Mb/s Full Duplex
- One is onboard Gigabit ethernet card and the other one is Intel Pro
1000 MT (ethernet card for server).
- Pro MT1000 card is connected to PCI slot.
