I have now spent the better part of two days sifting through usenet group archived data via Google trying to find either some recommended values or formulae to calculate starting values for use in /etc/security/limits.conf. The most frequent suggestion was to examine the README files for PAM. I'm sorry to say that doing so revealed only the mechanics of setting values in this file and the reminder to insure that PAM login file include a reference to pam_limits.so such as this: btw don't forget to add the line session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so add the end of /etc/pam.d/login otherwise the limits.conf file wont be read Because each system will have different quantities of resources, it seems logical that there should be a recommended relationship or "rule of thumb" for the values in limits.conf. But, I have found nothing except the somewhat circular logic of: see(a) -> see(b) -> see(a) without any substantive data. Does anyone have settings in limits.conf that are working? If so, will you be so kind as to pass them along?
