Solved + New problem: Can't boot from Core 2 CD

My problem turned out to be that xcdroast was burning incorrectly so I ran 
cdrecord manually from the commandline, a la: cdrecord -data foo.iso

My problem now is that I sometimes end up with a file on the cd which is 
always 2048 bytes larger than what I started out with. The new extra space 
is zero-filled. I say sometimes because I might do the same cd 2 or 3 or 
even four times before I end up with the correct byte count (and thus the 
correct MD5 checksum). 

Is there anything I could be doing better?
