Thanks to Mike Brodbelt, Brian Sherwood, Cody Collier, Neil Dombrowski
and Binand Sethumadhavan for reacting.
The problem was that a person creating IP's for virtual webservers in
the network created it using cnames as well as a combination of IP,
hostname and mac address.
Removing the cname-entries for those IP's resulted in everything
working again.
The consensus of the replies was that there might have been a syntax
error or some other invalid data in the data-files - which proved to
be the correct assumption.
I have learnt about a tool used by Mike to check the ascii values of
the file: 'od -c' of which I did not know before.
