Thanks for all responses. All but two suggested that I simply buy another serial card. This is not ideal for me, as firstly, this box will be mass-produced, so an extra off-board card will affect price and take up a PCI slot. Also, the machine uses serial internally (i.e. inside the case) for things such as LCD output. One product I've never heard of is the PC Weasel. The common issue with x86 machines is that you cannot interface with serial to work on things like the BIOS settings. This card is basically a video card and keyboard, but with serial output and input. Perfect for x86 servers. Unfortunately, it's a little more than I need. The good news is, PLIP looks much easier to set up than I had thought. I read the PLIP mini-HOWTO, and unlike PPP, it's basically a matter of compiling the kernel support and running ifconfig.
