SUMMARY: Error mounting cdrom, Redhat Advanced Server AS 2.1

Hi,

Special thanks to:

My conclusion on this issue is that my hardware is not supported by
Redhat
Advanced Server release 2.1 AS. When I run up2date from this machine, I
get
the error message that hardware/OS combination is not supported.

I tried a lot of options:

1. I tried mounting CDROM on the following kernels, 2.4.9-e.3 (stock
redhat
kernel), 2.4.9-e.16 (redhat errata kernel) and kernel 2.4.9-e.16BOOT (I
am
pasting "rpm -qi kernel-BOOT-2.4.9-e.16" output below:
This package includes a trimmed down version of the Linux kernel.
This kernel is used on the installation boot disks only and should not
be used for an installed system, as many features in this kernel are
turned off because of the size constraints.)
Only using kernel 2.4.9-e.16BOOT I could mount the CD.

2. I tried different CDROM's, diagnosed the ouput of "strace mount -t
/dev/hdc
/mnt/cdrom" etc. But no hope. The CDROM is a ordinary "ATAPI CD-ROM
DRIVE
40X MAXIMUM"

Thank you all very much,
Regards,
S. Subin

Original Post :

I installed "Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS (Pensacola)" on

a Pentium III desktop. After installation I cannot mount cdrom
(whichever
way i tried, i.e, mount /mnt/cdrom or mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc
/mnt/temp etc).
It gives the error message:

mount: Not a directory

I used the same CDROM for installation. /var/log/messages does not show
any error messages it only shows the message that IDE CDROM driver is
loaded.

I tried using kernels (stock kernel on CDROM). Then I got the
errata kernel source (2.4.9-e.16) and recompiled the kernel with IDE
support
as module. Still the same error message. But using the kernel
2.4.9-e.16BOOT
I could easily mount the cdrom. I am attaching the kernel config file.

Please help me.
