email and active directory

Hi,

Sending this again since the first attempt got flagged for suspicious headers. Moderators, if this gets through I'll cancel the other message. I'm curious what was suspicious though.

I've looked through the archives and haven't found all of these things in one place. There have been bits and pieces scattered around, but nothing concrete.

Background. Our University is switching from a Novell tree to an Active Directory forest. We used to use Netware and Nims for our network os and e-mail. They were tightly integrated; the creation of a network login automatically meant the user had e-mail.

We will be pretty much forced to set up our own Active Directory server as the primary server in our domain now. We would like to avoid using Exchange.

What we'd like is to have a system where we create an account on our AD server and the user automatically gets an e-mail account; there are a couple of different ways this could happen, and I don't have a preference except that it should be secure and easy ;) . We'd like SMTP, POP3, and IMAP support. If it has an integrated web based client, that would be great, but I think something like Horde or SquirrelMail would work.

Most of what I've seen has no problems with everything except the automagic Active Directory integration. I've read references to using LDAP and kerberos for this, but I don't know where to start looking.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on where to get started.

Thanks,

Bob
